For those of you who are interested, here is some information on the old Gulf gas station that my partners and I purchased in 2005.

The earliest documentation shows that Gulf Oil Corp purchased land on the corner of Locust and McKinney and built the Denton Service Station in May 1923.  The appraised value was $11,250.  As shown below, the original structure was approximately 20 feet by 14 feet.

Gas stations evolved from the 1920's to the 1930's from being "filling" stations to "service" stations.  Accordingly, in April 1939 the station was updated and expanded by Gulf Oil Corp with bathrooms and service bays.  This allowed the station operator to generate revenue in ways other than simply selling gas, oil, etc.

Below is a photo of the station taken from the 1945 tax rolls.

By the 1950's, oil companies began standardizing many of their stations in the "modern" style.  In August 1955 Gulf Oil updated this station, covering the exterior with porcelain enamel facing and updating details like the windows, restrooms, etc.  The porcelain tiles remain today (2005).

In October 1971, the station was purchased from Gulf Oil Corp by B&O for about $18,000.  It continued to operate as a service station.  B&O sold its interest in 1996 to Locust & McKinney Inc.

Today, the station remains in it's 1950's configuration, minus the gas pumps.  It sits empty.  In recent years the underground storage tanks were removed and the structure has been used for various purposes such as a used car lot and storage facility for a towing company.  But for right now, the poor little station just collects dust.

Our plan is to keep the structure in it's 1950's era configuration and use a portion of the building for professional office space.  My dream has always been to own and operate a vintage automobilia shop that specializes in transportation antiques and collectibles. Any dealers and/or collectors out there interested in developing this idea with me?? Let me know.

We'll update this page with vintage photos as we locate them (yeah, I know the modern picture is crummy; I'll get a better one)

The picture below is taken 2 years later (2007).  Notice the original exterior lettering and the vintage sign hanging inside.  There are more pics below of the restoration.

Gulf Oil 1960's - Present

May 2007 - After about two years worth of work, the Old Gulf station is finally coming around.  Below, you'll see pics of us tearing apart the interior and roof.  To date, the little station has 1) a brand new roof (four layers ~50 years worth of old roof removed), 2) a new office - which was the old store room, and 3) a few old artifacts in the sales room - which still needs to be refurbished.  The gentleman who worked/owned the station from the mid 1950's until the mid 1980's stopped by and mentioned that they used to stack oil cans in the window 4-3-2-1.  :-)  Thanks Mr. Owens!
